Rothschild & Co Hires HSBC's Tarrant as Head of Market Structure

Rothschild & Co hires HSBC's Joelle Tarrant as Head of Market Structure and Strategy and Investec's Luke Hedley as Sales Trader, both London-based and effective immediately.

Execution notes

  • Joelle Tarrant joins as Head of Market Structure and Strategy, effective immediately, from HSBC where she was MD and Global Co-Head of Cross Asset Electronic Sales.
  • Luke Hedley joins as a Sales Trader from Investec, bringing 13-plus years covering long-only and hedge fund clients, including a decade at Numis Securities.
  • Both hires sit in Rothschild & Co's Global Markets Solutions business in London, part of continued investment in the Equities Execution franchise following the Redburn Atlantic integration.

Rothschild & Co has hired Joelle Tarrant as Head of Market Structure and Strategy and Luke Hedley as a Sales Trader, effective immediately, with both roles based in London. The appointments sit inside the firm's Global Markets Solutions (GMS) business, its platform for integrated equity capital solutions that combines public and private market expertise to deliver financing strategies.

The hires signal continued investment in Rothschild & Co's Equities Execution business, an area the firm has been building since Redburn Atlantic became part of the group. Andrew Quick, Global Head of Execution for Rothschild & Co, framed the appointments as part of that growth trajectory.

"We are delighted at the arrival of these two high quality individuals. Joelle is well-known in the City for her expertise in Market Structure and she will help us continue to add clients – something that has been a major theme for us since Redburn Atlantic became part of Rothschild & Co. Luke is a hugely experienced addition to an already well-regarded team – known for their ability to source block liquidity for clients and help them navigate – and understand – ever more complex markets. We continue to invest in the Equities Execution business and to see significant growth," Quick said.

Tarrant's mandate: market structure advisory across client bases

Tarrant arrives from HSBC, where she served most recently as Managing Director and Global Co-Head of Cross Asset Electronic Sales. She founded and led HSBC's Global Market Structure team before that role, and prior to HSBC she was Head of Market Structure at RBC. That track record places her among the small group of sell-side executives who have built dedicated market structure research and advisory functions inside global banks.

For buy-side desks, the appointment matters because market structure coverage increasingly drives execution decisions: venue selection, algorithmic routing, best-ex documentation and regulatory engagement. A dedicated Head of Market Structure and Strategy at Rothschild & Co suggests the firm intends to compete on execution advisory, not just capacity.

"Rothschild & Co has a long and proud tradition of providing market-leading, independent advice to its global clients. I am delighted to be joining the firm and look forward to navigating market strategy and execution sales across all client bases," Tarrant said.

Her remit spans market strategy and execution sales across all client segments, according to her own statement, indicating the role combines internal strategy with client-facing market structure coverage.

Hedley brings 13 years of sales trading coverage

Hedley adds execution-side capacity. He has worked in equities sales trading for more than 13 years, covering both long-only and hedge fund clients. He joins from Investec, where he was an Equity Sales Trader, and before that spent a decade at Numis Securities as a Sales Trader.

That CV tracks the mid- and small-cap focus associated with Numis and Investec, and aligns with the block-liquidity sourcing capability Quick highlighted in his comment. For institutional desks, the addition points to deeper coverage in names where block liquidity is harder to source.

"I am thrilled to join Rothschild & Co, which for more than 200 years has provided its clients with unparalleled capabilities and perspective. Rothschild & Co is one of the world's leading advisory firms, and I am honoured to be joining the firm," Hedley said.

Context: execution build-out inside an advisory house

Both hires report into the Global Markets Solutions business, which Rothschild & Co describes as combining public and private market expertise in research-driven financing strategies. The firm argues that structure reflects a market where global sector knowledge and access to both public and private capital are requirements for growth.

Rothschild & Co's Global Advisory division operates a network of 1,600 industry and financing specialists across 47 countries, and the wider group employs roughly 4,600 financial services specialists in over 40 countries. The equities execution business sits alongside M&A and financing advisory within that structure.

What the announcement does not specify: reporting lines for the two roles beyond the GMS business, team headcount targets, or whether further execution hires are planned. The firm's stated growth in the equities business remains an assertion rather than a disclosed figure.

What is concrete is the combination of a senior market structure hire and an experienced sales trader, both effective immediately, into a business that has been adding clients since the Redburn Atlantic integration. The appointments point to a firm that continues to build out its Equities Execution business, with Quick stating the firm expects significant growth to continue.
