Nasdaq Calypso Adds Agentic AI Environment and Natural Language Assistant
Nasdaq embedded an agentic AI operating environment in Calypso with MCP connectivity, sandboxing and a natural language assistant, hosted on Amazon Bedrock.
Execution notes
- Nasdaq launched an agentic AI operating environment within Nasdaq Calypso, with a natural language assistant as the first capability.
- A Nasdaq/Acuiti survey found 56% of respondents fear competitive loss without AI/ML in clearing operations; nearly half cite manual intervention issues in post-trade.
- Agents run sandboxed with no external data retention, hosted on Amazon Bedrock, with on-premises clients able to connect; Verafin's Agentic AI already serves 800+ clients.
Nasdaq has embedded an agentic AI operating environment inside its Calypso capital markets and treasury platform, pairing the launch with a natural language assistant that queries the platform's system-of-record data. The move targets a documented bottleneck: according to a recent Nasdaq and Acuiti survey, almost half of respondents cited challenges from manual intervention in post-trade operations, and 56% said they risk losing ground to competitors if they do not integrate AI or machine learning into their clearing operations.
The operating environment gives financial institutions a contained, governed space to run, connect, and scale AI agents across the trade lifecycle. Clients can access Nasdaq Calypso's own agents and connect their proprietary AI infrastructure through an integrated layer built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging industry standard for linking AI agents to software.
"For institutions to adopt AI agents at scale, they need a trusted, governed infrastructure inside the capital market platforms they already run, a place to connect agents from many different sources to real workflows, data, and controls," said Magnus Haglind, Head of Capital Markets Technology at Nasdaq. "By integrating agentic capabilities and serving as the orchestration layer, we are evolving Nasdaq Calypso from a system of record into an intelligent platform that automates activity at every stage of the trade lifecycle."
Architecture and control boundaries
Nasdaq Calypso serves banks, brokers, asset managers, central banks, and other institutions for front-to-back office trading, risk management, and collateral workflows. The new environment applies operational boundaries, live oversight, and strict sandboxing with no external data retention — controls designed to keep AI agents operating solely within an institution's perimeter and policies.
Agents will operate on core Nasdaq Calypso data, drawing on the platform's system-of-record trading, risk, and collateral records, with the option to extend to additional enterprise, market, and reference data sources. That design point matters for desks weighing how far to let third-party or in-house agents reach into regulated workflows.
Nasdaq will host the agents and deliver them through Nasdaq Calypso's cloud environment, which is built on Amazon Bedrock to provide the scalable services and governance controls required to run agentic AI in regulated environments. On-premises clients will also be able to connect to the same agents. Nasdaq says clients retain full control of their data, and the firm will partner with individual clients as they work through internal AI governance and control requirements to bring the capabilities online.
First capability: a query assistant
The initial agentic capability is a natural language assistant that lets users query the platform's data, documentation, and other information. Nasdaq positions the tool as a productivity gain for data analysis and document review, aimed at accelerating decision-making rather than executing trades.
Beyond the assistant, Nasdaq plans to roll out a suite of governed agentic workers targeting operational friction caused by manual processes that persist across capital market workflows. The company did not publish a timeline for that rollout.
Existing footprint
The launch builds on AI capabilities already running across Nasdaq's financial technology suite. Nasdaq Verafin's Agentic AI workforce is in use by more than 800 clients, and AI-powered regulatory reporting operates within Nasdaq AxiomSL. Nasdaq expects patterns learned as institutions adopt these platforms to deliver greater performance and client outcomes over time — an assertion, not yet a measured result.
For operations and technology heads, the announcement frames a concrete choice: run agents inside a vendor-governed perimeter tied to the system of record, or build equivalent controls in-house. Nasdaq says it will sequence client onboarding through individual governance reviews, so early adoption pace will likely depend on each institution's internal AI approval processes rather than on the platform itself.
