DRW and Marex Execute First OTC Swap on Canton Network

DRW and Marex completed the first OTC swap on Canton — a total return swap on the tokenized iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, executed via Derivnex with Kaiko-distributed pricing.

Execution notes

  • DRW and Marex executed the first OTC swap on Canton Network via Derivnex.
  • The total return swap references the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, tokenized on Canton by Kaiko.
  • It is the first OTC derivative referencing a fully tokenized index on DLT infrastructure.
  • Derivnex uses the Common Domain Model (CDM) for standardized derivatives representation.
  • Future functionality is expected to add digital cash and collateral on Canton for margin and payments.

DRW and Marex have completed the first OTC derivative ever executed on the Canton Network — a total return swap referencing the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, transacted on Derivnex with the benchmark tokenized on-chain by Kaiko.

S&P Dow Jones Indices, Kaiko and Derivnex announced the trade jointly. It's the first OTC derivative to reference a fully tokenized index on distributed ledger infrastructure, and it connects benchmark data, licensing, trade representation and valuation inside one privacy-enabled stack built for institutional markets.

For swap desks, the mechanics matter more than the milestone. A swap lifecycle typically runs across multiple systems, bilateral messages and continuous reconciliation between counterparties. Here, Derivnex represented the trade on Canton as a smart contract containing the transaction terms, designed to stay with the trade through its lifecycle. DRW and Marex now hold a shared, synchronized record for valuations and other lifecycle events — which, in principle, removes the reconciliation layer.

What sits behind the trade?

Kaiko tokenized the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index on Canton. The token bundles three things: the benchmark data, access permissions and usage rules. Authorized participants can consume index data inside digital workflows while S&P DJI keeps its licensing and IP controls intact.

Kaiko also distributed the signed official S&P DJI index values that Derivnex uses to value the position throughout the swap's life. Benchmark consumption and position valuation now run through the same rail.

The setup gives index providers a controlled, auditable distribution channel into new institutional products, and gives platforms and counterparties a standardized way to consume benchmark data inside existing transaction workflows.

How is the trade represented?

Derivnex incorporates the Common Domain Model (CDM), the standardized digital representation of derivatives transactions and lifecycle events. Built on Canton, the platform lets bilateral OTC counterparties coordinate transaction workflows while keeping the confidentiality institutional markets require.

The roadmap doesn't stop at representation. Future functionality is expected to connect Derivnex-managed positions with digital cash and collateral on Canton, which would move margin, collateral and contractual payments onto the same infrastructure as the underlying transaction.

What did the participants say?

"OTC derivatives are one of the largest markets in institutional finance, but much of the infrastructure supporting them remains fragmented," said George Harrington, CEO of Derivnex. "Derivnex gives counterparties a common digital representation of a trade from affirmation through its full lifecycle. Completing the first OTC swap on Canton shows how that model can work in a live institutional market."

"This transaction shows how established benchmark infrastructure can support new institutional market structures," said Cameron Drinkwater, Chief Product Operating Officer at S&P DJI. He said pairing a flagship index with controlled digital distribution through Kaiko extends the firm's credit franchise into on-chain finance, building on more than two decades of liquidity and transparency on iBoxx benchmarks.

"This transaction demonstrates how tokenized benchmark infrastructure can support new institutional markets and products, while preserving the licensing, governance and operational standards required by financial institutions," said Ambre Soubiran, CEO of Kaiko.

"In line with Marex' focus on bridging traditional finance and digital assets, this transaction provides a practical example of how OTC derivatives can be represented and managed on distributed ledger infrastructure," said Nilesh Jethwa, CEO of Marex Solutions.

What's mandated and what's demonstrated?

Nothing here is mandated — this is a sample transaction, not a rule change or a production migration. What's demonstrated: a swap can live end-to-end on privacy-enabled DLT with licensed index data attached. What's asserted but not yet shown: cash, collateral and margin moving on the same infrastructure. That's future functionality.

Desks watching settlement and lifecycle cost should track whether Derivnex delivers the cash-and-collateral connection, and whether further benchmark providers follow S&P DJI into tokenized distribution.
