DTCC Tokenization Service Opens $30 Trillion of Assets
DTCC details its Tokenization Service: roughly $30 trillion in assets eligible, 25 pilot securities, Canton and private Besu at launch, Stellar and Circle's Arc expected in 2027.
Execution notes
- DTCC says approximately $30 trillion in assets are available for tokenization under the service.
- Canton Network and DTCC's private Hyperledger Besu network are designated for launch; Stellar and Circle's Arc are anticipated in 2027.
- Initial scope covers 25 securities across U.S. equities, ETFs and Treasuries, backed 1:1 by assets held at DTC.
- Conversion orders during business hours target processing times of 15 minutes or less; token transfers run 24/7 between registered wallets on the same chain.
- Details were released October 16, 2026; tokenized securities retain existing CUSIPs, rights and investor protections.
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) has released new details of its Tokenization Service, putting approximately $30 trillion in assets within reach of tokenization. The disclosure, published October 16, 2026, designates Canton Network and DTCC's private Hyperledger Besu network as launch platforms. Stellar and Circle's Arc are anticipated to follow in 2027.
The initial scope is deliberately narrow: 25 securities spanning U.S. equities, ETFs and Treasuries, each token backed 1:1 by assets held at the Depository Trust Company (DTC), DTCC's central securities depository. Tokenized securities keep their existing CUSIPs (the nine-character identifiers used for U.S. and Canadian securities), their rights and their investor protections. DTC continues to maintain the official books and records.
What does the service change for settlement?
The operational difference sits in transfer mechanics. Tokenized positions support 24/7 peer-to-peer transfers between registered wallets on the same blockchain — a departure from the batch-cycle settlement rhythm most U.S. desks plan around. Conversion orders between tokenized and conventional form will be available only during designated business hours, with DTCC targeting processing times of 15 minutes or less.
For operations teams, that split matters. Intraday liquidity planning gains a 24/7 transfer rail, but conversions back to conventional form remain bound to business-hours windows. Any workflow premised on round-the-clock tokenization assumes counterparties stay on the same chain and in registered wallets.
Mandated versus proposed
Two categories should be kept apart. What DTCC has committed to at launch:
- Canton Network and private Hyperledger Besu as designated launch networks
- 25 initial securities across U.S. equities, ETFs and Treasuries
- 1:1 backing by assets held at DTC
- Retention of existing CUSIPs, rights and investor protections
- Conversion processing targeted at 15 minutes or less
- 24/7 peer-to-peer transfers between registered wallets on the same blockchain
What remains on the roadmap, without committed dates:
- On-chain settlement
- Collateral management
- Netting
- Digital cash
- Expanded corporate actions
The Stellar and Circle Arc integrations carry a 2027 expectation, not a launch designation. Desk planning should weight those accordingly.
CSD framework preserved
DTCC frames the initiative as a phased integration of blockchain infrastructure into U.S. securities markets rather than a replacement of market plumbing. The existing central securities depository (CSD, the entity that settles trades and maintains ownership records) framework stays in place; DTC remains the record-keeper of authority.
That design choice carries consequences. Tokenization here is a distribution format layered over incumbent custody and record-keeping, not a parallel settlement system outside the CSD's perimeter. Buy-side firms evaluating exposure to tokenized formats gain the same CUSIP-level protections they hold in conventional form, provided conversion windows and chain compatibility align with their liquidity needs.
What does this change for the buy side?
For asset managers, the practical question is workflow fit. Collateral mobility, treasury management and cross-border settlement stand to benefit from 24/7 transfer capability — once the service moves beyond 25 pilot securities and once the roadmap items for on-chain collateral and netting move from proposal to production. Until then, the service functions primarily as a controlled test of tokenized transfer mechanics inside DTC's custody perimeter.
DTCC's stated roadmap extends the initiative toward settlement, collateral and netting functionality over time. The October 16 disclosure commits only to launch scope; the remaining capabilities remain forward-looking statements from the utility, to be measured against delivered functionality as the service scales.
