CME to Launch World's First Baseball Futures on October 12

CME will list the world's first Baseball futures on October 12, pending regulatory review, tracking CME FSPI indexes on all 30 MLB clubs from the 2026 Postseason.

Execution notes

  • CME plans to launch the world's first Baseball futures on October 12, pending regulatory review.
  • Contracts track CME FutureSports Performance Indexes covering statistics on 30 professional baseball teams.
  • Standard contracts are valued at 10x the underlying CME FSPI MLB indexes; micro contracts are 1/10 the index value.
  • The methodology is stated to align with IOSCO Principles for Financial Benchmarks.
  • Trading starts with the 2026 Postseason and the four League Championship Series clubs, available around the clock.

CME Group will launch the world's first Baseball futures on October 12, pending regulatory review. The contracts track CME FutureSports Performance Indexes (CME FSPI) covering statistics on the 30 professional baseball teams, beginning with the 2026 Postseason and the four clubs in the League Championship Series.

The new product extends CME's listed derivatives catalog into sports performance as an underlying. For desks, the practical questions are contract sizing, clearing arrangements and data methodology — all of which CME has specified in its announcement.

What do the contracts look like?

CME Group Baseball futures will come in two sizes:

  • Standard-sized contracts, valued at 10x the underlying CME FSPI MLB indexes.
  • Micro-sized contracts, at 1/10 the value of those indexes.

Participants can trade live around the clock, taking immediate positions on a regulated exchange with central clearing safeguards, transparent pricing and equal market access, according to the exchange. The contracts are listed on and subject to the rules of CME.

The two-tier sizing mirrors the standard/micro structure CME already runs in equity index futures, letting participants scale exposure without changing venues. Around-the-clock availability means position management is not tied to game broadcast windows or US cash market hours.

How are the underlying indexes built?

The CME FSPI methodology converts official sports statistics into rules-based, benchmark financial metrics. Index performance follows systematic methodologies with transparent statistical frameworks — adding points for positive actions and subtracting for negative plays or setbacks.

CME states the methodologies align with the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Principles for Financial Benchmarks, supported by published governance and oversight procedures. That alignment matters for institutional participants whose compliance frameworks require benchmark underlyings to meet recognized administration standards.

The indexes use Official League Data — a data-provenance claim desks should weigh the same way they would an index provider's licensing arrangement for any other listed product.

What does CME say about the launch?

"CME Group provides price discovery and risk management across every major investable asset class, and we see an opportunity to bring investing and hedging discipline to the business of professional baseball," said Tim McCourt, Senior Managing Director and Global Head of Equities, FX and Alternative Products at CME Group.

McCourt framed the product as a benchmark-integrity play: "The innovative contracts we're developing with FutureSports will be built on robust indexes using Official League Data, with the transparency and integrity that only regulated exchange-traded products deliver."

What is mandated versus what is asserted?

The October 12 launch date remains conditional on regulatory review — that is the one gating item in the timeline. Everything else in the announcement is product design, not yet live market structure: contract multipliers, clearing, IOSCO alignment and around-the-clock access are exchange statements about how the product will function once listed.

The IOSCO alignment claim, like the "robust indexes" characterization, comes from CME itself. Participants will be able to test it against the published governance procedures and the actual index behavior once the 2026 Postseason begins trading.

With Baseball futures, CME adds a new underlying class — team performance statistics — to its cleared futures stack, and the October 12 debut will show whether sports-performance benchmarks attract the two-sided flow a listed market needs.
